Although the guns are semi-automatic, the problem of high rate of fire persists, and the guns experience above-average breakage of bolt catches, bolts and firing pins. Counterintuitively, pistol-caliber ARs have significant recoil, at least as much as 5.56-caliber AR-15. Many indoor shooting ranges allow the use of pistol caliber ARs, with a lower noise signature and lower velocity rounds.
Developed in the late 1950s, the AR-15 is available in a wide range of calibers, from .50 Beowulf to .22 Long Rifle. One of the newest adaptations of the platform is to accommodate semi-automatic pistol calibers. The original AR-15 weapon was adopted by the US military in the mid-1960s as the M16 assault rifle. The direct impingement system was an integral part of the M16 rifle, and was carried over to later versions, including the M16A1, M16A2, M16A3, M16A4 and the M4 carbine. In the 1980s, Colt decided to take another shot and develop a new version in the 9-millimeter Parabellum, a popular pistol cartridge. The use of a pistol cartridge that used significantly less gunpowder than the 5.56 cartridge and generated significantly less gun gases required a redesign of the new weapon's operating system.
Colt's designers removed the direct impact operating system, which allows them to remove the gas lock and gas out. The new pistol operates on the blowback principle, a system long in use among semi-automatic pistols. Expanding gases resulting from burning gunpowder drove the Schrauber group to the rear, throwing out the spent cartridge. The BCG is pushed back against the spring-supported buffer tube, then forward again, whereupon it retrieves a new cartridge and returns to battery.
Unlike the direct impingement system, which used only a fraction of the energy of the 5.56 motor gases, the new blowback system used all the energy of the 9-millimeter round. The gun cartridge actually generates so much energy that the cyclic rate of fire was a lightning fast 1,250 rounds per minute. This also exerted great force on the internals of the new gun, damaging bolts and the hammer and trigger pins that held the fire control group in the lower receiver. A hydraulic buffer slowed the rate of fire to 650 to 850 rounds per minute.
