F16v Block 70 - Lockheed Martin has received a $1.12 billion contract from the US government to produce 16 advanced F-16 Block 70 Fighting Falcons for Bahrain.
The "indefinite contract award" means that the Royal Bahraini Air Force will become the first operator of the most advanced and capable version of the F-16 ever designed.

Moreover, unlike previous versions of the F-16 - which were built in Fort Worth, Texas - these new "Vipers" must be manufactured in Greenville, South Carolina.
The F 16 First Flew 47 Years Ago, And The Air Force May Keep It Flying Decades Longer Due To Problems With The F 35
With production of Lockheed Martin's new F-35 Joint Strike Fighter ramping up while production of the Fighting Falcon is declining, the company has been forced to move the F-16 line to a smaller factory that can handle lower volumes. Still, the move represents a fresh start for the F- 16, which is still expected to generate strong sales in the coming years.
“We value our long-standing relationship with the Kingdom of Bahrain and look forward to beginning production activities on their first Block 70 aircraft at our Greenville facility,” said Susan Ouzts, Lockheed Martin's vice president of the F-16 program. "This sale underscores the significant, growing demand we are seeing for new production F-16s around the world."
Lockheed Martin has invested heavily in a new F-16 factory in South Carolina. The company expects the production of the F-16 at the site to create between 150 and 200 new jobs in Greenville.
The company also notes that F-16 production supports hundreds of US-based Lockheed Martin engineering, procurement, maintenance and customer support jobs, as well as thousands of US supplier jobs. Indeed, 450 US suppliers in 42 countries currently support the F-16 supply chain.

Lockheed Martin has good reason to be optimistic about securing further F-16 sales. The Block 70 version of the venerable F-16 is a capable warplane by any measure and draws much of its technology from its more advanced F-35 stablemate. But while the F-35 is a far more advanced and capable warplane than any version of the F-16, not every country needs a Joint Strike Fighter or is even approved to receive a stealth fighter. In those situations, the F-16 Block 70 may be the most capable fighter aircraft available to those US allies.
At the heart of the F-16 Block 70 is the Northrop Grumman APG-83 Active Electronic Scanned Array radar, which is based on technology provided by the F-22 Raptor and F-35 and can track more than 20 targets at once. The radar can also generate 1 ft resolution synthetic aperture radar maps and has a range in excess of 160 nautical miles against ground targets.
The Block 70 jet features a modernized cockpit with a new Center Pedestal Display (CPD) that provides tactical imagery on a high resolution 6" x 8" screen. The new screen will allow pilots to take full advantage of the new Block 70 sensors.

The cockpit also has provisions for a Joint Helmet Mounted Cueing System II (JHMCS II) display, which allows the pilot to take full advantage of the Raytheon AIM-9X Sidewinder. Moreover, a new automatic ground collision avoidance system helps prevent pilots from crashing the plane.
F 16 Deliveries Near Resumption, As Bahrain's Lead Block 70 Jet Takes Shape
The F-16V has an improved airframe with an extended life of 12,000 hours and can carry compatible fuel tanks.
To push the plane around the sky, Lockheed says the new Block 70 jet has an "advanced engine." While Lockheed Martin did not specify which engine, given the Block 70 designation, the aircraft will likely be powered by a General Electric F110-GE-132 rated at 32,500 lbf (144 kN) afterburner thrust.
"Lockheed Martin has more than 36 years of experience integrating weapons with the F-16," the company said. "No other organization can match this weapons integration experience. In agreement with the US Air Force and multiple F-16 foreign military sales customers, Lockheed Martin has certified more than 3,300 mounting and release configurations for more than 180 types of weapons and storage. Our experience as a weapons integrator has allowed the F-16 to be one of the most versatile multirole fighters ever.
The F-16 will fly for decades to come. There are still 3,000 operational F-16s flying around the world with more than 25 different air forces. At least the nozzles will need to be upgraded to the Block 70 standard as time goes on. The future is still bright for the F-16. The proven F-16 is the most successful multi-role fighter in the world, proven in combat and will soon build advanced interoperable capabilities within the Bulgarian Air Force. In addition to capabilities, it will improve Bulgaria's cooperation with allies and help the Air Force maintain security in the region and around the world.
Technical Work Started On The Purchase Of F 16 Block 70 From The Usa
The Bulgarian Air Force is acquiring eight new F-16 Block 70 aircraft. It has also shown interest in eight additional aircraft to build its fleet and capabilities.
With Bulgaria's first F-16 procurement, it is building F-16 infrastructure, training pilots and developing maintenance personnel to support operations. Those operations are ongoing, and in fact the pilots have been in the US for training for the past few years, and the first Bulgarian F-16 pilot recently graduated from training at Morris Air Force Base in the United States. The next set of eight jets will benefit from this infrastructure when they arrive. This enables efficient and cost-effective operations.
With more than 700 F-16s operating in Europe today, the choice of the F-16 allows Bulgaria to be part of a peacekeeping network across Central and Eastern Europe, and beyond.

When Bulgaria became part of the F-16 network, it didn't just buy an aircraft. It is also building a decades-long strategic relationship with the United States and its allies. This means opportunities for military cooperation and partnership with the US Air Force. This means pilot training, field training, joint exercises with the US and other partners. It also means greater regional military partnerships.

When Bulgaria decided to become part of the F-16 network, it was not about acquiring a new type of aircraft, but about building strategic relations with the United States and NATO allies for decades to come. In addition, it means military cooperation and partnership with the US Air Force, pilot training, field training, joint military training with the United States and its Alliance allies. This means more significant regional military cooperation.
